Olympic Opening Ceremony Tableau Sparks Controversy

Apology Issued Amid Backlash Over 'Last Supper' Depiction

A performance during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday has prompted controversy among the Catholic community, with some calling it disrespectful and blasphemous. The tableau, which featured drag queens dressed as Jesus and the apostles, has been met with backlash as people say it mocked The Last Supper, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci.

Paris Olympics organizers have since apologized to anyone who was offended by the tableau, saying it was not their intention to mock or disrespect any religious beliefs. However, the apology has not satisfied some critics, who say the damage has already been done.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it took note of Paris 2024's clarification, but did not comment further. The IOC has previously stated that it respects the religious beliefs of all athletes and spectators, and that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination.

The controversy over the tableau has overshadowed the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, which was otherwise a celebration of diversity and inclusion. The ceremony featured performances by a wide range of artists, including drag queens, breakdancers, and singers.
