Solar Storm Watch: Geomagnetic Storm Expected to Hit Earth

Update: May 10, 2024 | 7:03 PM

A dramatic blast from the sun set off a geomagnetic storm in Earth's atmosphere on Friday that is expected to cause disruptions to power grids and satellite communications.

The solar storm, which is classified as a G3 (strong) storm, is the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun. CMEs are large clouds of charged particles that are released into space when there is a sudden release of energy on the sun's surface.

The CME that caused this storm left the sun on Wednesday and is expected to arrive at Earth on Saturday. When it does, it will interact with Earth's magnetic field and set off a geomagnetic storm.

Geomagnetic storms can cause a variety of effects on Earth, including disruptions to power grids, satellite communications, and navigation systems. They can also lead to increased levels of aurora activity.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for Saturday and Sunday. The watch means that there is a potential for significant disruptions to power grids and satellite communications.

NOAA is urging people to be prepared for the potential effects of the storm. People who rely on power grids or satellite communications should have backup plans in place in case of disruptions.
